Advent Liturgy — Alone, Yet Together

Updated: Dec 28, 2020

This Advent we invite you to mark the beginning of each week by lighting a candle at home and using this simple liturgy. We shall also be doing this in our online worship. In this way we can be united with one another and with God, even though we are physically apart.

You might like to choose a candle that holds a particular memory or story for you — maybe someone special gave it you in a particular time or place; or perhaps it was one you bought yourself because you were drawn to it.

But however you came to have your candle there will be some story or memory attached to it. You might like to reflect on this and remember at home; we’ll have opportunity to share some of our stories in our online worship.

Advent 1

Leader: We light this first candle as a sign of our hope. Hope that God can meet us, even in the mess of our world. Let this light reveal your presence with us once more.

All: O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

Advent 2

Leader: We light these candles with peace in our hearts for the promise of proximity, the nearness of God. Even when we forget to listen, God is as close as our own breath. This, in a confused and confusing world, is a peace that passes all understanding.

All: O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

Advent 3

Leader: We light these candles as a sign of our joy in the beautiful things of this season — not just the things that glitter and flash, but the deeper things: the beauty of the heart and the soul, the beauty of love shared in service and hospitality.

All: O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

Advent 4

Leader: So, we light these candles as a sign of love. Of God’s love for this world. And of our love for God, our love for our neighbours, and love for ourself.

All: O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

Christmas Day

Leader: We light this candle to symbolise Jesus, the light of the world. Rejoice, a Saviour is born.

All: A saviour is born, indeed. Joy to the world.
