Eco Church • And finally… Recycling

August 2024

Are you looking to live more sustainably? We’ll post some easy ways to help you do it.

Over the last few months I’ve explored the different actions we could take before getting to the point where we recycle our waste.

The black bin should be a last resort.

Recycle

In Haxby, Wigginton and the surrounding area we are lucky in that we have many places to take our recycling as well as our kerbside scheme.

Last year our Eco Group had a trip to Allerton Park waste recovery site and learnt a whole lot more about recycling. The guide was very keen to encourage us to recycle whatever we could. The black bin should be a last resort.

They have machines that sort the waste on site which does pick up metals, organic matter and recycling etc, but it tends to be lower grade because it is mixed with other materials.

When they have recycled what they can, the waste is burnt and powers up to 40,000 homes. After waste recovery, landfill is at the very bottom of the hierarchy.

So lets start chipping away at those actions that are further up the hierarchy — like refusing, reducing and reusing, before we resort to putting things in the black bin or going to the tip.
