Giving With Gift Aid

Updated: Apr 11

Do You Need to Complete a (New) Form?

We’re approaching the time when we have to submit the claim for this tax year’s Gift Aid. This is immensely valuable for the church, letting us claim back an extra 25% on the giving of people who have paid Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax.

You will need to complete a (new) Gift Aid Declaration Form if:

  • You’d like to give using Gift Aid but haven’t yet completed a Form, or

  • You’ve previously completed one of the forms but have since changed your name or address.

You can download a Gift Aid Declaration Form here to print out, fill in and return:

Or you can email Marianna at giftaid@hwmc.org.uk to ask for a paper form.

When you are ready to send in your form to us, or if you have any questions about Gift Aid, please email Marianna at giftaid@hwmc.org.uk for guidance.

What Is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK scheme available to us as a charity. It means we can claim extra money from HMRC.

We can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give us: at no extra cost to yourself! (That’s as long as you’ve paid the basic rate of tax and make the donation from your own funds.) This means if you use Gift Aid for your giving, you can increase the value of your donations by 25%!

Are my donations eligible for Gift Aid?

We can claim Gift Aid when you make a monetary donation from your own funds and have paid sufficient UK Income and/or Capital Gains Tax during the tax year.

  • Your donations (to all the charities you use Gift Aid with) will qualify as long as they’re not more than 4 times what you have paid in tax in that tax year (6th April to 5th April).

  • The tax could have been paid on income or capital gains.

  • If your circumstances change and you no longer pay enough tax, it’s important to tell us. If you don’t tell us and we continue claiming Gift Aid, you’ll need to pay any difference back to HMRC.

How to Give With Gift Aid

To start using Gift Aid with your giving, you need to make a Gift Aid Declaration by filling in one of our forms. This will let us claim the tax back from HMRC on your giving.

When you fill in our form you can choose to include all previous donations from the last 4 years. But do tell us about any tax years where you did not pay enough tax; we mustn’t claim for those years!

You can also choose to have your declaration continue for future years, so we can continue claiming in years to come.

If Your Circumstances Change

Do remember to let us know if your circumstances change!

For example:

  • You don’t pay enough tax in a text year to cover our Gift Aid claim to HMRC, so we know not to make a claim to HMRC

  • You change your name

  • You change your address
